Over the High Atlas and south into the Sahara — the essential Morocco desert circuit, privately run at a pace that lets the landscape settle in.
Leave Marrakech in the early morning and climb through the Tizi n'Tichka pass — at 2260 metres, one of the highest paved roads in North Africa. The switchbacks slow things down enough that the Atlas unfolds properly. Stop for tea at a small café near the summit. Down the south face, the landscape shifts dramatically from green cedar valleys to pale rock and red earth. Aït Ben Haddou appears like something deposited there centuries ago — because it was. Walk the ksar in the afternoon light, before the tour buses arrive or after they leave. Continue to Ouarzazate for the night.
The Draa Valley begins here — a long corridor of kasbahs, palmeries and ochre villages between ranges of bare rock. Stop at the palm groves of Skoura and walk among rose-coloured rose damask fields if the season is right. The Dadès Gorge offers a short drive into dramatic limestone formations. Todra Gorge for a late afternoon walk: 300-metre walls and a cold river at the base. Stay in a guesthouse on the river.
South through Erfoud and into the stone plains that precede the dunes. Merzouga arrives almost without warning — a village at the edge of the Erg Chebbi, the largest sea of dunes in Morocco. Arrive in the late afternoon. Take a camel across to the camp at dusk — the colour change on the dunes in the last hour before sunset is what most people come for and rarely forget. Dinner at the camp, Moroccan drums, and a night sky that needs no description.
Wake before sunrise for the dunes — optional but worth it. Return north through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas around Midelt, where you may encounter wild Barbary macaques on the road edge. The drive back to Marrakech via the northern Atlas route passes through a completely different landscape from Day 1 — softer, greener, with old silver-mine towns and Berber market villages. Arrive in Marrakech in the early evening.
